What Grate Shape Says About Your Grill

At NOVO we have designed our outdoor grills with two kinds of stainless steel cooking grates: Round and Square. WHY?

  • Round Grates: If you’ve ever cooked on a backyard grill before chances are that you’ve cooked on round shaped grates. Round grates have long been the industry standard because round rod stock is sturdy, readily available and relatively affordable. Our HONE and ALTA series grills use heavy gauge, thick, round rod stock grates.

  • Square Grates: Square shaped grates offer some distinct advantages over traditional rod shaped grates. Our professional style square grates come standard on NOVO series grills and are available as an upgrade on HONE series.

    1. Square grates contain more material than round grates of the same thickness. In fact our 8mm professional style square grates have 27% more stainless steel than 8mm rod grates. That extra metal means more thermal mass. The grates hold & deliver more heat into your food. This means deep and thick restaurant quality sear marks on both sides of your steak.

    2. The wider top of our square grates means more surface to food contact which enables deeper searing and more caramelization of the food.

    3. Our square grates are easier to clean. Just run the scraper along the top and sides to keep your grates squeaky clean.
